Mystic Herring Run

“Race for the River” 11th Annual Mystic Herring Run 5K Race, Walk, & Paddle Saturday May 19th, 2007

Run, walk, or paddle for the fish! Run along a flat and fast course on the Mystic River bike path, dashing past thousands of herring returning from the ocean back to the Mystic River. Or hop in your canoe or kayak and paddle up the river following the herring up towards the Mystic Lakes following a 3 mile or 12 mile course. If racing is is not your thing, join the non- competitive 5K walk on the same course.

Iron Herring Award Compete in both races and be eligible for the Iron Herring award for the male and female with the fastest overall time in the 5K road race and the 12 mile paddle.

Support the Mystic River All race proceeds benefit the Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA). Cleaning up our waters – making them all fishable and swimmable – is the mission of the Watershed Association. That means finding places where sewage leaks into streams from broken pipes or where forgotten outlets discharge toxins into the
rivers. It means working with others to stop that pollution. MyRWA’s teams of water quality monitors identify places with high levels of fecal coliform and other toxins and alert municipal officials to the problem. Thirty days later, the information is made public. The success of this program is remarkable. Pipe by pipe, the Mystic is getting cleaner.

From Belmont to Chelsea, from Winchester to Revere, and in the 18 other communities in the Mystic watershed, everyone needs the assurance that streams, ponds, lakes, rivers, and the ocean near them are safe – safe for people and for wildlife. With your help and support we can make this happen.
