Composting

Composting is a simple method that turns food and yard wastes into nutrient rich, organic soil that nourishes your garden. Composting is fantastic because it reduces the amount of waste created, helps improve your soil, helps soil hold moisture (thus, conserving water), and reduces the need for phosphorus laden fertilizers. Composted soil is more permeable and can hold more stormwater, reducing runoff and the pollution associated with it. Many towns in the Mystic River Watershed provide citizens with reduced cost compost bins, costing between $16 and $38 (bins usually cost between $70 and $200!). Check out the chart below to see if your town provides compost bins. If they do not, call them and ask them to! In addition, some towns, like Cambridge and Lexington, provide free compost to residents.
